Our Toddler curriculum encompasses both Montessori and EYFS principles, emphasising emotional literacy, self-regulation, and social skills. Our priority intent is to expand their vocabulary, so they become enthusiastic communicators. We intend to boost their confidence whilst promoting independence in all areas, including self-care practices like self-feeding, handwashing and toilet training. Our aim is for our toddlers is to be fully prepared for the exciting Montessori curriculum that awaits them in preschool.
Independent & creative learners
The Toddler classroom caters for children from 20 months to three years approximately.
At this explorative age there is an inner drive for children to refine their physical skills. Therefore, an abundance of floor space is vital to develop spatial awareness. This classroom is the largest space in the nursery, with a beautiful wooden floor and high ceiling, as well as an abundance of natural light.
The classroom consists of a Hygge inspired relaxing area as well as all areas of the EYFS curriculum. This includes resources and activities to support Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical Development, and Communication & Language.
In addition to this we have our extended Montessori curriculum area for children to access freely. The area provides resources to enhance practical life skills, early sensorial and maths skills, which prepares them for the preschool classroom and future learning.
Come rain or shine the children have daily access to the outdoors which is vital for their wellbeing. Our outdoor learning includes forest school sessions and nature walks in the beautiful Moseley Park as well as daily outdoor play onsite.
Loose parts and open-ended play are vital for children’s development to become independent and creative learners. Much of our resources offer open-ended experiences rather than traditional toys. These types of experiences build self-confidence, concentration, coordination, and independence – some of the pillars of Montessori.
child-led activities
Emotional literacy is taught daily so that children can identify emotions and understand & empathise with one another. All children are encouraged to be independent in every aspect of their life at nursery. Free choice of activities encourages spontaneous engagements with the environment, therefore child-led activities flourish.
Freedom of choice is promoted on the understanding that there are also some rules - making sure activities are left ready for another child to use, respecting themselves, their friends and their environment.
We instil the love of language through songs, stories, poems and a range of oral language games. All staff are trained in high level interaction skills and sustained shared thinking. During the flow of interactions, a member of staff will gently provide a narrative, introduce new words and help children to recall facts.
